Comments: Illustrations by Joseph K Schmidt. Part 2 of a 5
part series; others are 1-Jack In the Box; 3-The Nyria Effect;
4-Card Under Glass; and 5-Cryptology.
The introduction in part reads: "The opening effect, that assigned
card mysteriously turning around while inside a card box,
introduces a gimmick that is then exploited to produce a wide
variety of effects. My feeling is that tricks which rely on simple
but rather specialized gaffs should be presented almost as
incidental tricks, things that you just happen to think of. The
line, "That reminds me of something I used to do. Here let me show
you…" is a signal to the well-informed that you weren't reminded
at all; you plan the whole thing out long before hand. Handled
this way, tricks like "Inner Sanctum" take on an aura of the
impossible. If the tricks seems to be done impromptu, there is no
possible way to achieve the effect the spectator sees. This
manuscript is the only one in the series to deal with a single
gimmick (though in a variety of ways). There are many other
possibilities using different variations of the gimmick, including
a method of indexing cards inside the card box."
