1. Matthew 5:44. Fill in the missing words: "Love your enemies, ________ them that curse you, ______ ______ to
them that hate you, and pray for them that _____ _____ ______ and persecute you."

NIV simply states, 44 "But I tell you; Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you."
NIV footnote states, "Some late manuscripts enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you."

KJV Mt 5:44: But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

2. Matthew 17:21. What two things are required to cast out this type of demon?

NIV: verse is missing from the text. Text goes from verse 20 to verse 22.
Footnote states: "Some manuscripts you. 21 But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."

KJV Mt 17:21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

3. Matthew 18:11. Why did Jesus come to earth?

NIV: verse is missing from the text. Text goes from verse 10 to verse 12.
Footnote states, "Some manuscripts heaven. 11 The Son of Man came to save what was lost."

KJV: Mt 18:11 For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.

4. Matthew 27:2. What was Pilate's first name?

NIV: text does not provide a name, simply states, "Pilate, the governor." There is no corresponding footnote.

KJV: Mt 27:2 And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

5. Matthew 27:35. What were the words spoken by the prophet concerning the parting of Christ's garments?

NIV: Nothing in the NIV text indicates any words by the prophets.
Footnote states: "A few late manuscripts lots that the word spoken by the prophet might be fulfilled: 'They divided my garments among themselves and cast lots for my clothing' (Psalm 22:18)"

KJV: Mt 27:35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

7. Mark 7:16. What does a man need to be able to hear?

NIV: verse is missing from the text. Text goes from verse 15 to verse 17.
Footnote states,  "Some early manuscripts unclean, 16 if anyone has ears to hear, let him hear."

KJV: Mr 7:16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.

8. Mark 9:44. Fill in the blanks. Where their ______  ______  not, and the ______  is not quenched.

NIV: verse is missing from the text. Text goes from verse 43 to 45. Verses 43 states, "43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where  the fire never goes out."
Footnote states, "Some manuscripts out, where 'their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched."

KJV: Mr 9: 43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

9. Mark 11:26. What happens if you don't forgive?

NIV: verse is missing from the text.
Footnote states, "Some manuscripts sins 26 But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your sins."

KJV: Mr 11:26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

10. Luke 4:4. Complete the following: "Man does not live on bread alone, _______________________. "

NIV: no indication is provided of anything beyond the word "alone" in this verse.
Footnote states, "Deut 8:3"

KJV: Lu 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
Note that Deuteronomy 8:3 includes, "but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live."

11. Luke 7:28. What was John? (teacher, prophet, carpenter, etc.) What is his title or last name?

NIV: no indication is provided. Text states, "I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." No footnote is provided.

KJV: Lu 7:28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

12. Luke 9:55. What did the disciples not know? What did the Son of man not come to do? What did He come to do?

NIV: no indication is provided of any of these. Verses states, "55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them, 56 and they went to another village."
Footnote states, "Some manuscripts them, And he said, "You do not know what kind of spirit you are of, for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And"

KJV: Lu 9:55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. 56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

13. Luke 17:36. Who is in the field? What will happen to them?

NIV: verse is missing. Text goes from verse 35 to 37.
Footnote states, "Some manuscripts left. 36 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left."

KJV: Lu 17:36 Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

15. Luke 23:38. In what three languages was the superscription written?

NIV: no indication is provided. Text states, "There was a written notice above him, which read: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS."

KJV: Lu 23:38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

16. Luke 24:42. What did they give Jesus to eat with His fish?

NIV. Apparently nothing. Verse states, "They gave him a piece of broiled fish."

KJV: Lu 24:42 And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.

17. John 3:13. As Jesus spoke, where was the Son of man (indicating His deity)?

NIV: no indication is provided. Text states, "No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven - the Son of Man."
Footnote states, "Some manuscripts Man, who is in heaven"

KJV: Joh 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

18. John 5:4. What happened in the water of the pool at certain seasons?

NIV: verse is missing. Text goes from verse 3 to verse 5.
Footnote states, "Some less important manuscripts paralyzed - and they waited for the moving of the waters. 4 From time to time an angel of the Lord would come down and stir up the waters. The first one into the pool after each such disturbance would be cured of whatever disease he had."

KJV: Joh 5:4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

19. John 7:50. What time of day did Nicodemus come to Jesus?

NIV: no indication is given. Text states, "Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked"

20. Acts 8:37. What is the one requirement for baptism?

NIV: verse is missing. Text goes from verse 36 to 38.
Footnote states, "Some late manuscripts baptized? 37 Phillip said, 'If you believe with all your heart, you may.' The eunuch answered, 'I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.'"

KJV: Ac 8:37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

21. Acts 9:6. What did Saul ask Jesus?

NIV: no indication, the words in the NIV are of Jesus, saying "Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do."

KJV: Ac 9:6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

22. Acts 15:34. Write the name of the man mentioned. 

NIV: verse is missing. Text goes from verse 33 to 35.
Footnote states, "Some manuscripts them, 34 but Silas decided to remain there."

KJV: Ac 15:34 Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still.

23. Acts 24:6-8. What would the Jews have done with Paul? What did the chief captain command?

NIV: no indication of what the Jews would have done. Verse 7 is missing; text in NIV is, "6 and even tried to desecrate the temple; so we seized him. 8 By examining him yourself you will be able to learn the truth about all these charges we are bringing against him."
Footnote states, "Some manuscripts him and wanted to judge him according to our law. 7 But the commander, Lysias, came and with the use of much force snatched him from our hands 8 and ordered his accusers to come before you. By"

KJV: Ac 24: 6 Who also hath gone about to profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our law. 7 But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands, 8 Commanding his accusers to come unto thee: by examining of whom thyself mayest take knowledge of all these things, whereof we accuse him.

24. Romans 16:24. Copy this verse word for word.

NIV: this verse is missing. Text goes from verse 23 to 25.

25. 1 Timothy 3:16. Who was manifested in the flesh? (Diety of Christ)

NIV: text simply states, "He", but this devotional version has a breakout box stating "God became Man." The NIV text states, "Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great: He appeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory."
Footnote states, "Some manuscripts God." [for the He in "He appeared in a body"]

KJV: 1Ti 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

26. 1 Peter 4:14. In the second part, how do [they] speak of Christ? And, what do Christians do?

NIV: no indication is given. Verse states, "If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you."
No footnote is provided.

KJV: 1Pe 4:14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

27. 1 John 5:7: Who are the three Persons of the Trinity?

NIV: It is not clear from this text. Verses 7-8 state, "For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement."
Footnote states, "Late manuscripts of the Vulgate testify in heaven: the Father, the Word and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one. 8 And there are three that testify on earth: the (not found in any Greek manuscript before the fourteenth century)."

28. Revelation 1:11. Fill in the blanks. Jesus said,  "I am the A_______ and O_____, the _______ and the____________:" (Christ's deity)
